What is a Custom CMS?
by Seb Tucknott | | Web Development
At Brightsite we use a custom content management system (CMS) as standard for all of our websites.
A CMS sits behind the website and is where a client logs into to change content – such as words, pictures and videos – on their website. Our CMSs also allow clients to manage their own onsite SEO, add and delete pages of their website, amend menus, contact details and much more.
We have developed our own custom CMS which we tailor to each individual client’s needs. There are many ‘off the shelf’ content managements systems – such as WordPress and Drupal – but we prefer to use our own for the following reasons:
- The code in our custom CMS is more lightweight which makes the website faster to load and more search engine friendly. It also means there is less load on the server, potentially reducing hosting costs (which we have seen with some of our larger clients)
- The code is unique which makes it far less susceptible to hacking. The majority of hacking takes place when hackers find security flaws in a widely used CMS. If thousands of websites use this same CMS then they are all vulnerable as the same flaws will be present in all. The risk of this happening is lessened with a custom CMS
- Using a bespoke CMS makes it quicker and easier to implement bespoke functionality. With ‘off the shelf’ CMS systems you are more limited in the functionality that can be applied to a CMS without having to significantly adjust the code, which makes it heavier and slower to load.
